We are excited and proud to announce that the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) will be honoring our very own President, Darren Port, on May 10, 2007 at their annual fundraising event, Spring for a Cure.

Darren has been involved with this Foundation since 1995 when he created the Young Leadership Committee within JDRF. This committee has been responsible for raising over $1 million for diabetes research over the past 12 years. Darren is personally vested in this Foundation because he has watched his best friend struggle with diabetes since childhood. At a certain point in his life Darren realized that he had the power to make a difference in his friend’s life by working with JDRF to raise money to find a cure. He has been a strong supporter of JDRF ever since.

Darren currently sits on JDRF’s Board of Directors and works with over 30 other members whose children struggle with this disease on a daily basis. At every meeting he listens to their stories of hardship and exhaustion. Darren finds that he never grows used to the idea that there are children and families who must face the horrifying complications of this disease every minute of every day.

JDRF is the only major diabetes organization focused exclusively on research to find a cure for diabetes. Although JDRF receives no federal funding, since 1970 it has given more than $900 million to diabetes research worldwide. Diabetes is a disease that strikes children (and at times, adults) suddenly, making them insulin dependent for life. Diabetes will kill more Americans this year than AIDS, cancer or emphysema. Through our efforts, and the support of individuals like you, we hope to find tomorrow’s cure, today.
